  | BurgosBurgos is a small city (approximately 198,000 inhabitants) in northern Spain. The former capital of the province of Castilla y Leon, Burgos is rich in history and it is the site of more ecclesiastical monuments than any other city in Spain, the finest example being the Gothic Cathedral, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984. Burgos, like many other cities in Spain, demonstrates the dramatic interplay between the historic and the modern, the city currently undergoing many exciting developments due to the bid for the European Capital of Culture in 2016. Among these developments are the openings of an airport which will fly to Barcelona, Mallorca and Paris, and el Museo de la Evolucion Humana (Museum of Human Evolution), which will take advantage of the city's close proximity to Atapuerca. Burgos is also located on the world famous pilgrimage, El Camino de Santiago, and thousands of pilgrims pass through the city.
