DOs and DONT's at Interviews

Fran Rodriguez & Julie Hetherington

DO call the school briefly in order to check whether they have received your CV and at the same time to acknowledge your interest.

It's always good to come across as keen. However, don't use that call to ask questions about the job or school as the person you're calling may be very busy. Therefore, keep it short but sweet.

DO find out as much as you can about the school or town before the interview.

DO read carefully any information you have received from the school and make sure your questions haven't already been answered in that information.

It doesn't bode well when you ask questions which have already been covered beforehand.

DO send copies of any written observation feedback you have received from previous employers.

If you haven't been given written feedback, ask for it.

DO really think through the pros and cons of living in a city/town and apply accordingly.

DO use the interview time to ask questions yourself.

However, make sure you limit the number of questions you ask. I, as an employer, have been bored to death with people asking the most trivial things. If you have lots of questions, write them in an email and send them to the school!

DO check your spelling once, twice and fifteen times before you send in a CV and covering letter!

DON'T say you're interested in teaching young children when in actual fact you can't stand them or are frightened to death of them.

Being clear about this will benefit you and the school mutually in the long run.

DON'T eat during the interview.

DON'T complete an application form half-heartedly.

If you can't be bothered, don't bother!

DON'T criticize your last boss/job.

Put it down to experience and learn from it (there are two sides to every story)

DON'T use silly email accounts eg:
mickeymouselover@hotmail.com.

How can you expect to be taken seriously?

DON'T send informal introductory letters .

e.g. Hi there, I was just wondering if you have a job for me ...
